Echoes of Grace: A Look Back at the 2023 Music & Liturgy Conference

The halls of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, were once again filled with the sound of sacred song and spirited fellowship from July 18-23, 2023, as we celebrated the 48th annual Mississippi Conference on Church Music & Liturgy. After a successful return to Millsaps last year, our second year on campus was a week of profound learning, inspiring worship, and joyful community.

We were blessed to gather under the guidance of an exceptional faculty who challenged and inspired us throughout the week.

Our Esteemed 2023 Faculty

  • The Rev. Gregory L. Millikin: An Episcopal priest from the Diocese of Chicago, Fr. Greg led a powerful three-part series on the Incarnation, exploring themes of Advent preparation, the Nativity, and the full celebration of the Christmas season. His theological insights provided a rich foundation for our worship and music.

  • Cynthia DeDakis: A seasoned leader in the world of Anglican music, Cynthia shared her vast experience, planning our Wednesday Morning Prayer and leading a presentation on working with choristers and the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM).

  • Janet Yieh: Organist and Director of Music at Church of the Heavenly Rest in NYC, Janet inspired us with her technical prowess and visionary work. She presented on her co-founded initiative, "Amplify Female Composers," and planned our Thursday Morning Prayer.

A Week of Worship and Song

The heartbeat of the conference is always our daily worship, and this year was no exception. The week was bookended by two magnificent, professionally recorded services that showcased the hard work and dedication of our participants.

  • The Thursday Evensong at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church was a sublime service of light and song, filled with beautiful choral offerings, including works by Stephen Paulus, Simon Lole, and Stephen Cleobury. The homily was delivered by The Rev. Gregory Millikin.

  • The Closing Eucharist at the Chapel of the Cross in Madison was a triumphant conclusion to our week. The service featured a moving sermon from Fr. Millikin and magnificent music, including the uplifting anthem "Hope for Resolution" by Caldwell & Ivory.

Fellowship, Learning, and Fun

Beyond the chapel, the conference was alive with activity. Attendees enjoyed:

  • Engaging Reading Sessions led by our faculty, discovering new anthems and service music.

  • A Well-Stocked Music Display by Lois Fyfe Music, offering a chance to browse and purchase new repertoire.

  • The Beloved Rose Hill Cabaret, which made its annual "return from exile" on Saturday night, offering a hilarious and heartwarming evening of talent and camaraderie.

  • Restaurant explorations around Jackson, fostering conversation and connection.

  • Practical sessions on finding balance and self-care, led by Chaplain The Rev. Jennifer M. Deaton and Director Matt Woods.

A Community of Stewards

We are deeply grateful for the hard work of the MCCML Staff and Board, whose dedication made the week seamless. We also reaffirmed our commitment as good stewards of intellectual property, ensuring composers and creators are rightfully honored for their work.

Relive the Moments

A picture is worth a thousand words, and we have a gallery of memories to share from our week together.

Until Next Year

The 48th annual conference was a testament to the vibrant and enduring spirit of church music and liturgy in our community. The connections made, the skills honed, and the worship offered will resonate in our home parishes throughout the year.

We extend our deepest thanks to every participant, faculty member, volunteer, and supporter who made this week possible. We look forward to seeing you all again next summer for another unforgettable conference!
